Gion Festival 2025
Hello.
My name is Matsuo from Risshisha.
Today I would like to introduce you to the Gion Festival, a seasonal summer event in Kyoto.
The Gion Festival is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Kyoto in July.
With a history lasting over 1,000 years, this festival is one of Japan's three main festivals
and attracts large numbers of tourists each year.
We'll share with you the fun and atmosphere we experienced during our actual visit, along with pictures.
The Gion Festival has its roots in the Heian period of 869 and is held to honor Susanoo-no-Mikoto, a god kept at Yasaka Shrine.
During an epidemic at the period, it was said to have started when people prayed to the gods.

Yoiyama (July 14–16, before the festival)
This is the night before the parade, when the town's boats are on display,
lanterns are lit, and the sounds of Gion music fill the air.
Artworks and folding screens are displayed under townhouse ceilings,
and the event is also called the "Folding Screen Festival."

Yamaboko Parade (July 17th for the first festival and July 24th for the second)
One of the most amazing sights in Kyoto is the yamaboko parade, which features beautiful boats.
The decorations, which are of great artistic meaning, are created using imported Nishijin textiles and fabrics.
Most popular is the young child who walks in front of the naginataboko.
He appears on a palanquin without ever setting foot on the ground
and is thought of as a messenger of the gods.
The Gion Festival is more than just a "festival";
it is an expression of the culture and tradition that continue to exist in Kyoto.
This tradition, which has existed for hundreds of years,
is filled with the emotions and prayers of people and blends in perfectly with the landscape of the city.
Next year, make sure to attend the Gion Festival if you haven't already.
This summer will certainly be remembered.
